I just finished reading "A Cotton...Mr.Haynes,
I just finished reading "A Cotton Mill Town Christmas" on Christmas day 2011. It really took me back for several reasons.I hope you have time to read this.
I was the shoe shine boy in Charlies Barber shop during this time of the late '60's. I made 25 cents a pair and Charlie paid me $5.00
a week to sweep up hair and clean the bathroom. The little bit of wisdom I have now comes from the old timers hanging around the barber shop telling their stories.
I knew Chiney Adlerman. My Grandfather had a coal hauling business in Hawkstown.
My family lived in Wendytown but I spent most of the time at Granny Keith's just above the Y on Main St.
Mike Clemmons visited Granny Keiths a lot as well. Monk was his nickname. Everyone in Fries had a nickname. This could be another book.
I went to Vaughan School and Fries High School and was a close friend of Freddy Jennings. Mrs. Waddell was my favorite teacher. Mr. Fender was the principal.
I worked in the cotton mill at age 15. Some of the mill bosses got me on because I had shined all of their shoes.
Played ping-pong at the Y with Ed Goodson, set pins in the bowling alley for 10 cents a game, and played basketball in the gym in my socks until I had blisters on my feet.
Claude Blair used to do the state inspections on Dad and my cars.
I rode in Bruce's A Model in the 4th of July Parade in 1967 I think was the year. Bruce also chased us on Halloween.
He always knew where we were running to and was usually there before we were, waiting on us to take us home.
If this isn't enough irony, I now live in State Road and drive through Elkin daily to work. Both mention in the book.
There were a lot more references in the book that brought back memories. You have no idea how this book captivated me.
I enjoyed it tremendously.
Thank You So Much, Mike G.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-9080685123896764492011-09-26T16:30:03.695-07:002011-09-26T16:30:03.695-07:00Nice Banner, I wish I could sign with the Guild mo...Nice Banner, I wish I could sign with the Guild more often. I have to agree with most of Jack and Mary Ann's points. Cover change-yes, but not the title. Although it sort of suits the time frame of the story I think there's a better cover out there. And I, too, came away with the feeling the story was about Bank's search for a 'place of belonging'. And Ginger's just sort of merged into his search. I'm a little ambivalent about the epilogue. I do like things wrapped up but it could be shortened to advantage perhaps. I'm up late with this rambling reply so feel free to disregard!Sylvianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-69992791318647171132010-05-05T06:41:18.000-07:002010-05-05T06:41:18.000-07:00I'm hot and cold about the epilogue myself. And I need to...Bob,
I'll have to think about it. And I need to go back and look at it again. Trouble is, I loaned the book to somebody and never got it back, so I don't have a copy. Just from memory (and I'm getting old and pretty unreliable) the thing I liked (and remember) about the ending was Banks coming back to Mattie. And that mattered a great deal to me--that he came back to her. I thought the title referred to Mattie and her love for Banks (and her place of belonging--in his life) as much as it did about Banks and Ginger's road trip. But, lordy, it's been a while, and I've read a ton of books since then and I'm afraid I'm not much help. If I can locate the book, I'll do a refresher read and get back to you. By the way, for what it's worth, I wouldn't change the tile but I would change the cover. It is, after all. a love/mystery story and not a travelogue ;-)Mary Ann Artriphttp://www.maryannartrip.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-44462219551334935352010-04-25T08:02:44.000-07:002010-04-25T08:02:44.000-07:00Jack and Mary Ann - both good reflections - thanks...Jack and Mary Ann - both good reflections - thanks a bunch. You both have similar comments, that Banks' story (it really is his story) - including his ramblings - have him directed back to Clarkesville, and Mattie.

I'll give the title some more thought, and I believe I'll keep the Epilogue - but shorten it to include only the part in which Mattie and Banks adopt the girl.

Jack, the metaphor is there, but I'm slowly coming around to the point that writers' primary responsibility is to the story. Leave the deeper meanings and mining of metaphors to reviewers. I'll maybe talk a bit about that at the Symposium.

Mary Ann, I agree about the cover - I just have to find the right photo or image.

Thanks again, folks!appalachianauthorhttp://www.jrussellrose.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-13141714785524233852010-04-25T19:02:32.000-07:002010-04-25T19:02:32.000-07:00I'll check it out - thanks!I'll check it out - thanks!appalachianauthorhttp://www.jrussellrose.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-13457257491574514842010-07-10T17:01:31.000-07:002010-07-10T17:01:31.000-07:00Way to go, Zach. Dr. Dollittle talked to the animals and you can talk for the animals in your writing if you wish. You can also talk to imaginary people or anyone else in your writing. Pull up an empty chair and sit down in another chair facing the empty chair, then think about somebody you would like to "tell- off, or somebody you liked to say something nice to, or perhaps shock somebody. Anyway, you get the idea, but don't get carried away and not write down what you said.Adda Leah Davishttp://www.goldenharvestcreations.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-92139791193212352942010-07-10T16:56:36.000-07:002010-07-10T16:56:36.000-07:00I haven't had time to visit this blog for seve...I haven't had time to visit this blog for several months, but after reading the excellent entries I regret that I haven't. I've just finished a new manuscript entitled "The Untangling Tale" and it has been sent to a publisher. Now, I will really go to work on my next trilogy. The main title is "The Many Shades of Green" but there are three books under this banner. The first book is "The Trials of Jamie O'Reilly." I've been working "off and on" on this trilogy for about ten years and it is now clamoring to be heard.
We are fortunate to have Jack Rose as president of the Guild since he seems to have an online presence in Facebook, on this blog, and other places. Do you suppose I'll know what I'm doing in ten more years? I keep trying to learn something new every day but sometimes the things I learn are totally worthless; such as what a dog in India is called, or the name of a long-nosed fish. I'll probably never be in India and I can't eat the long-nosed fish, but I picked up that information doing crossword puzzles. Probably if I didn't work crosswords while eating my breakfast cereal I would learn more useful information.Adda Leah Davishttp://www.goldenharvestcreations.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8799378623356019603.post-63500950929206575892010-03-17T22:11:56.000-07:002010-03-17T22:11:56.000-07:00From your lips to God's ear, Mary Ann! Because so much of what I read (in my opinion) is not well written. We have some really good writers in AAG--and then we have some writers who need to work (intensely) on their craft. What good does it do if the reviewer only encourages the mediocrity. If we think we're great, and people tell us we're great, where is the incentive to improve? Heck, we're already perfect. I have done some reviews on Amazon and I've yet to give anybody five stars. Five is reserved for the Bible and Shakespeare. And I'm always disappointed when somebody reviews my work and gives me five stars. They either didn't read the book or they're not being honest.
